Tracking Trinidad's Wild Side
In collaboration with community members from Brasso Seco Village in Trinidad we have installed motion-sensing cameras throughout remote forest tracts in the Northern Range mountains. We are excited to report that our cameras have captured images of many of the elusive mammals that are rarely spotted by humans. The next step is to use these camera "traps" to estimate population density of species that are potentially over-hunted in Trinidad. Thanks to Carl and Kelly Fitzjames for maintaining this effort!! |
Our project was featured in Trinidad's national newspaper, The Guardian!
AFS Conservation Genetics Workshop
In March 2014, Chris Funk and I co-led a continuing education workshop for fisheries managers attending the regional Colorado/Wyoming American Fisheries Society conference. Great discussions and great fun! NESCent Ambassador Program
In October 2013 I joined Jory Weintraub and Courtney Fitzpatrick from NESCent in co-leading a "Teaching Evolution" workshop designed for secondary school Biology teachers in Trinidad. We received a lot of positive feedback about our workshop including rumors that the Birds of Paradise in this video provided inspiration for upcoming Carnival costumes! K-12 classroom visits throughout Trinidad Following the teachers workshop, we have visited several primary and secondary school classrooms throughout Trinidad to talk with students about their biodiversity hotspot in their backyard, local examples of natural, sexual, and artificial selection, and careers in science. |
